Leadership is a centuries-old concept that has been upheld and yet evolved over the years. In the start of the 21st century, leadership was highly centered on autocratic styles which featured giving works very limited access to decision making. The exercise of full authoritative power over employees by the top management of organizations slowly gave way to more flexible methodologies of leadership such as those which upheld democratic rights of works such as the right to self-expression.

As time moved on, democracy in organizational settings implied that workers could have their say regarding issues of their concern. Top management policies also gave way to more transformational and inspirational leadership styles which appreciated and motivated organizational workers. The benefits of the improvements that were made to this effect were well evidenced as more and more workers became more dedicated towards their organizational duties as they felt recognized.

Leadership has also been transformed from the technological point of view. Technology has been incorporated into every aspect of leadership including communication whereby leaders can disseminate information to their workers in an instance. Technology plays a major role in coordinating leadership functions in the workplace today where workers can communicate amongst themselves as well as being able to communicate with the leadership.

The transition from autocratic style of leadership to the more democratic style can be explained from a theoretical perspective. Firstly, the demand for decentralization of powers from the top management to the lower management worker level was meant to equip and empower the workers towards becoming more competent. To this effect, transformational leadership was meant to ensure that workers and the management could share responsibilities with workers often becoming competent to inherit responsibilities from retired members of the organization.

Secondly, such transformation was also fueled by the need for leaders to become all-inclusive in their leadership styles. Dealing with workers, for instance implied delegation of responsibilities and sharing obligations in the workplace, something that was targeted towards making sure that complex situations got eased up.

Also, competitiveness in the 21st century has become more rampant. Staying relevant and competitive in the workplace today requires workers and leaders to all-alike to work together. This, when rightly incorporated, ensures that new ideas and transformations are included in the workplaces to make them competitive. The survivability of such businesses whose existence has traversed time from the 20th to the 21st century is pegged on nurturing new ideas.
